About backtalk
"backtalk is a love letter to my life, really. Or at least it's a postcard to childhood. It's a lot about the whole process of growing up getting put into this torturous slow motion machine and layers of shit hardening on top of you before you've gotten the chance to grow into yourself. It's complicated because remembering being a kid is complicated. I feel like there's a lot of courage in just embracing that complication, which is what I'm doing. It took a lot of soul searching. I'm proud of this vision. This album was actually the reason I broke off from my last band haha. They were a great group, really awesome people. We started working on the first song of the album, figuring out composition...and I just couldn't take them messing around with the identity of it. Like it's a deeply personal thing and it felt like they were trying to change me along with the music. They said they were just trying to understand to play it, but I can't really file the edges down from something like this just so it can be palatable and processed. But yeah great people I wouldn't say a bad word about them. So I broke off to do my thing.Anyway turns out I had a lot of shit going on upstairs when I did that hahaha, got some help not too long after. So like the album's identity has kind of evolved with that too, and it kind of nods back to that incident in a self-referential way. So there's definitely a lot tied in with conflict and like, broader personal struggles fighting against how you want to be seen versus compromise for the sake of connection. That's the backtalk. Like it's the wiggler or toddler saying no, it's the comments you drop to get a reaction, it's the passive aggressive shit you say under your breath at the professional, it's genuine arguments trying to get somewhere with someone, it's anything and everything that says hey, I'm here, do something about it, please do something about it."
About Saturn
Saturn is solo artist, born and raised on Alternia. He began his love of music listening to Janis Joplin, Fleetwood Mac, The Doors, and other 60s classics. He describes himself as a "spiritual Woodstock baby...it was a lifeline of finding myself when nothing around me made sense."He rehomed on Earth in Tennessee in 1977. He was lead guitarist and singer for local psychedelic rock group Coelacanth. The band dissolved shortly after in 1979. Saturn became enamored with deepening punk and grunge movements and set his sights on establishing himself on the West coast. He founded his most memorable band, Undertold You So, in 1985, known for its hard lean on the culture hybrid of Alternian influences, shock value, and at times body horror-like performances on stage. The band's journey was tumultuous and marred with interpersonal conflicts leading up to Saturn's disappearance from the band in 1991. The following years were a period of emotional, relationship, and addiction turmoil as he struggled to properly reinvent himself. After a long road of insights and coming to terms with inner demons, he left Earth and switched gears to other intergalactic work, while continuing to craft his first solo album, backtalk. He is labeled as a true eclectic, waltzing between psychedelic and classic rock roots, a gritty post-punk and ska drive, experimental guitar melodies, and briny vocals.
